How To Make Money Writing (like Freddy Krueger!)

make money writingIn my last post on writing, I told you about the “Faster, Easier Blog Writing” live training event that Danny Iny is putting on especially for you (for free).

Well, it occurred to me that you might want to know a little more about your instructor.

I realized that when some of my subscribers (who I guess did a Google search or something) started emailing me asking “what’s with all this Freddy Krueger stuff?”

See, Danny Iny is also known as the Freddy Krueger of Blogging.

boost your traffic with writing

Boost Your Traffic By Writing

He earned that nickname by guest posting EVERYWHERE on the blogosphere. I’m not exaggerating – in 2011, he wrote over 80 1,000+ word long guest posts for every blog you can think of: Copyblogger, Problogger, FreelanceSwitch, MarketingProfs, ThinkTraffic, and the list just goes on, and on, and on.

To the point where someone left a comment saying that “Wow, Danny, you’re like Freddy Krueger – wherever I turn, you’re there!”

And the name stuck. Freddy Krueger of Blogging. Talk about memorable, right? ;-)

So that’s where the name comes from, and I know that Danny is going to share a lot more of the story on the live training event, including how he used writing to grow his own blog 100x in less than a year.

Does that sound like something you’d want to know?

The training is going to be awesome – I’ve known Danny for a while now, and he never disappoints.

The event is happening on Thursday, May 17 at 8pm BST/3pm Eastern – sharp!

He’ll definitely mention his “Write Like Freddy” training program, but you don’t have to buy anything to get a lot out of the training.

Cool?

I personally can’t wait for the webinar…….hope to see you there too!

Is A Flexi-business For You? Three Essential Components To Help You Decide

what business to start

When deciding what business to start, consider if a flexi-business is what you need. But first, some background….

After two days of intensive training and learning this week I’m inspired to look at Women’s Way To Wealth through different eyes and see how I can bring more value to you, my readers.

Two words have come up a lot over the past couple of days. Freedom (my big “WHY” in life) and flexibility.

As women, moms, daughters, partners, wives, friends, business women and employees (to name just a few!) we wear many hats. If we’re creating income whilst also juggling these many responsibilities we need a business that is flexible and fits around our other commitments. That is the definition of a true flexi-business.

So that got me to thinking about what Women’s Way To Wealth is all about and how I can make a difference to all the women out there who want the same things I do – freedom and flexibility.

Before I get to the point (and I promise I will shortly), I’d like to clarify the Women’s Way To Wealth name. The “wealth” in this context, and my  meaning of it, is not just financial wealth, although that’s an important part of it. I’m talking about wealth in the widest sense, including living a wealthy and abundant lifestyle, enjoying fulfilling and meaningful relationships, and richness and generosity in all aspects of your life.

So, is a flexi-business right for you?

There are three major components to your flexi- business which will give you all the income and freedom you’re looking for.

1. Fun

Don’t even think of doing anything (ANYTHING!) that you don’t enjoy. If it doesn’t make your heart sing, and you don’t feel you could it every day for the next two years, then don’t go there. I can’t tell you the number of online businesses I’ve started in niches that I deemed highly profitable, but where I had little personal interest in, that haven’t worked.

In fact, working on anything that isn’t fun or doesn’t excite you will just drain your energy. While you can make money from businesses that don’t light your fire, you won’t get the same profits or satisfaction from them, so why would you? Do something fun and you’ll reap the rewards.

2. Flexibility

OK, this sounds obvious but are you clear on what the “flexible” in flexi-business means for you?

Do you have a clear idea of what you’re trying to achieve, when you’re available to work or how many hours you’re prepared to commit to making your flexi-business a success?

If you have kids and can work during school hours, great. You can carve out a big chunk of time during the day. If you’re working in a job though, you may have to work in the evenings (but better that than spending hours glued to the TV).

The definition of a flexi-business is a business that allows you to work where as well as when you want. Just think about that for a moment. What if you could travel the world working only from your laptop or ipad? Or run a business during your daily train journey or at the local coffee shop?

Or have a lifestyle business that only requires you to spend a couple of hours on it every day, or week.

Or a business that you set up and automate, which you can leave to run on autopilot (niche websites are the perfect “set and forget” business). Creating new income streams or starting a home business doesn’t have to mean months of hard work and drudgery.

3. Family-friendly

There are two aspects to this. The first is flexibility which we talked about above, which allows you to work around your family and kids. Work when and as much as you want, depending on your commitments.

The second is that your business can grow as your kids do. My work patterns are quite different now that my kids are at school full-time, as opposed to when they were little and I would work during their nap times. You don’t get that level of flexibility when you’re working for someone else.

So, consider these three pointers before you start your new flexi-business and be clear on what you want and what you’re willing to commit to, to make your new business a success.

And then? Start taking massive action.

5 Key Insights to Guarantee Business Success with any Niche, Brand or Product

Well, what a wonderful way to start the week after returning from holiday (a week’s skiing in France with my eldest son, a fantastic time was had by all!). As part of my prize for winning the Firepole Marketing “Marketing That Works” contest back in January I was invited to guest post on the Firepole Marketing site and be introduced to their 20,000 readers. Wow, talk about a bonus and an honour! Read my Guest Post here:

5 Key Insights To Guarantee Business Success With Any Niche, Brand or Product

Danny Iny, one of the co-founders of Firepole Marketing, is a great writer and has built up his business and blog from nothing to mega-success in little over a year. So, you could do worse than to visit his site and learn from the man himself. Thanks Danny for this great opportunity.

Here is the email I received on returning home:

Happy Sunday, Cassie!
I’m writing today because I’d like to make an introduction.
As you may remember, back in January we ran the Marketing That Works Ideas contest on Firepole Marketing. Lots of marketers submitted ideas, and we picked the 20 best ones to feature on the blog.
We ranked them based on the interest our readers showed in them, and then our readers voted to pick a winner.
The person that I’d like to introduce you to is Cassie Hicks (@CashMachineGal on Twitter). She won the contest, and she’s got a guest post on our blog today, called 5 Key Insights to Guarantee Business Success with any Niche, Brand or Product.
That’s it, just thought you might enjoy it – a little light Sunday reading. :-)
Have a great rest of the weekend,
Danny Iny

Last chance to get the Home Business Success Kit for Free

First of all, thank you for being a Women’s Way To Wealth member, and subscriber to my updates. The momentum and energy from this amazing group of savvy women continues to impress and inspire me, and I hope you continue to find my updates valuable.

The feedback to the Home Business Success Kit has been extremely positive and it’s now time to reflect its true value by charging for it. While giving great stuff away for free is a great way to build your list and community, it actually devalues the product. Research shows that freebies are not valued as much as paid products, and consequently are less likely to be used.

So, for the next few days you can still grab your free copy. But from Monday 16th April there will be a charge.

I will be updating the content a bit too so look out for the all new version soon.

And, in the interests of research and keeping you up-to-date I’ll let you know how the uptake of the Home Business Success Kit. (Hint: I predict sales to soar!)

Are You Ready For The New Facebook Timeline?

As you may know Facebook changed all Fan Pages over to the new Timeline design on 31st March. You can see the Women’s Way To Wealth fan page here:

For the most part, the main thing you need to do immediately is to resize your graphics to fit the new template.

Timeline graphic sizes

Cover photo (the large banner picture at the top of the page) is 180 pixels x 540 pixels

The Thumbnail is 32 x 32 pixels

Admin Panel

The Admin panel is where you track your visitors, friends, receive and send messages. You also use the admin panel to organise your photos and tabs and its where you control what your visitors see and how they interact with you.

Here is a screen shot showing showing the WWTW admin panel (it is hidden on the screen above). You can see I have Messages (direct messages from other users), Notifications (alerting me to new comments and posts), New Likes and Insights (usage stats). You can also see from the graph below the impact of posting on your page. Every purple dot is a blog post and the green and blue lines show the reach and reaction from your fans.

If you had a fan page it will now have been automatically converted to this new format. If not, it’s just as easy to set up a fan page from www.facebook.com/pages and click on “Create page” in the top right corner:

The Good News

For those of you that had a fan page which has now been converted, the good news is that all of your content, pictures and tabs are there. Nothing has been removed although the page does look rather different. There is more of an emphasis on visual content and Facebook is encouraging us to use more photos and videos with the new format. (Side note: This ties in well with the upsurge in use of  Pinterest which is very visually focussed too, and you can tie the two together to strengthen your brand and spread your message).

The Challenges

Generally, it’s just a matter of getting to grips with the new design and making your page a) look the best it can be and b) learning how to optimise your page to meet your business goals, whether that’s attracting visitors, promoting a special offer or webinar or driving traffic to your website.

My challenge is to work out how to tailor my welcome page – which used to be the landing page for any new visitors to the Women’s Way To Wealth fan page. The page is still there but is now just showing up as another graphics button so I need to reorder it to appear first on my timeline and amend the graphics to promote my free ecourse (and link to Women’s Way To Wealth). I will produce a video when I’ve worked out how to do this and can show you!

Making Money From Your Social Network

Or “Feed Your Fish To Build A Community That Pays You Handsomely”

Talk about an inspiring week. I went to a great presentation this week at the newly resurrected Ecademy London event.

[Ecademy for those that aren't in the know, was founded by Penny and Thomas Power. Penny and Thomas are great people to know - and good fun - and I'm looking forward to hearing Thomas speak at the Entrepreneurs Night Outnext week].

Philip Calvert (of IFAlife) gave a wonderfully entertaining, inspiring and enlightening account of his journey from IFA employee to running the world’s largest online IFA network. Phil was made redundant after 25 years in the financial services industry and decided to go it alone.

However he only succeeded once he’d carved out a specific niche for himself. As a “Marketing Consultant” he was trying to be all things to all people and competing in a crowded and competitive sector. However, by defining himself as a “marketing consultant to financial planners and IFA’s” he narrowed his niche down and became a big player in a small pond. [There were a lot of fish pond analogies in Phil's talk!]

Seeing his son’s influence and reach through his large group of Facebook friends, Philip realised the power of social media. He bravely tackled his piles of business cards (25 years worth) and combined his extensive contacts with his seminar experience to created his online community for IFA’s.

The secrets to building a community that you can monetize?

Phil compared starting an online community with shouting into an aircraft hangar. To start with you’re a lonely voice shouting into the abyss, and no-one is there, or bothers to respond. However, if you keep “feeding your fish” every day, by providing useful and relevant information, the fish will come. Once you have a critical mass of members in your community (or “tribe”) you can stop feeding them every day and the community will start to interact with each other. As time goes on, they’ll bring their own food [information] to share with others. Then you’ve reached a critical mass because your community doesn’t depend on you to feed it, it takes on a momentum of its own.

How many ways can you monetize your social network?

Once you’re providing valuable information on a regular basis and your community are coming back every day to “feed” you can start to include promotions. Phil talked about throwing pebbles in from time to time – perhaps promoting an upcoming event or webinar – and then the occasional big brick. This might be a copy of your new book or a coaching programme or event.

  • You will also find that once you have a community in place that you’ll attract advertisers and sponsors. Phil was wary of JV partners who, he felt, might gain more than they contribute, but if that’s the case you can offer them a sponsorship or advertising deal.

  • As well as sponsoring your community site, sponsors can pay to sponsor a niche email or a certain section of your site.

  • Use social media to add value to your community. Plus, once you understand and use social media you can create products showing your community how they can benefit from it too. This could lead to a niche specific products, such as an Ebook or webinar on “LinkedIn for IFA’s” or “Facebook for IFA’s”.

  • Foursquare networking offer branded pages that you can customise for your niche. You can put tips for your members and charge for posting on your page.

  • Get members of your community to contribute to products that will be of value to the group, such as quotes, tips, interviews on specialist topics
Takeaway message? Keep feeding your fish every day – it doesn’t always have to be your own content. You can cull relevant information using Google Alerts, RSS feeds, and industry news sites.

What community can you build?

Find a niche and create a community to bring like-minded people together…….not only is this fun and rewarding, you’ll find many doors open to new opportunities and new ways to make money!
